Military Camp
you basically take around 2 hours to reach samuel hill camp.good thing about this camp is that they have handphone reception and there's phones for calling back using the local calling cards.there are even computers with internet access but you have to fight against the army of bull-flies(they are very nasty with the size of a regular bee and they sting too.) but dont worry too much cuz they are kinda dull and you can easily kill them with your relatively bigger palm.
there's canteen over there and the food's quite tasty if you have extra bucks to spare.the milk products and kebab would be the my recommendation.but if you are heading there with daylight i would have to warn you about the amount of bull flies you would encounter.(apparently they gather for military training too)
cant say much about the training there cuz it's restricted(under certain military laws blah blah..) but it's quite an experience especially when you are in an environment totally different from the locals.
the environment was, well dusty, dry and extremes.in the morning it's kinda cool when you are in the shades but it gets pretty warm when you stand under mr sunny.most of the afternoons are quite hot but the strange thing is that you dont get to sweat much even when the temperature feels almost like the same in Sinapore.AND the best thing one should experience is the night fall.it gets cold around 4.30-7.30pm and the temperature drops further during 8pm-1.30am.After that will be the ice age period when the temperature drops until you can shiver when you are wrapped up like a gift with 3 layers of clothings(make it 4 if you include your undergarments) it's quite a nightmare when you are so tired and yet you cant sleep cuz you are trembling so much.
the day is short in Rockhampton. sun rises around 4am and sets around 4.30pm.in the night everything is so cloaked so much that you really cant walk around without any light.(dont mention the fields it's worse)
the food served in the camp was quite acceptable with the prawns being the most outstanding and popular dish.the prawns just taste so so much fresher (you can feel every single tissue of it while chewing) totally love them. for mutton lovers you will definitely love the camp because they give you a huge (it's really huge around half an A4 paper) dont worry seafood lovers because they practically add in mussels shellfish squids in most of the dishes they have. sadly they dont serve beef here. (btw rockhampton is actually well-known for their beef products) be sure to try the beef jerky it tastes like bacon with a hinge of 'cow' flavour.Night snacks should not be missed as they purchase cookies from local markets and the cookies are as nice as famous amos.seriously.
for those who maybe going for training in rockhampton: please bring along face masks and goggles(if you are not 4 eyed) it's alot better if you dont let those nasty dust get into your lungs and eyes. Bring along gloves too because it gets very very very cold if you are in the fields (almost used my socks as gloves lol.) Bring a bicycle belt and you will get yourself (and your cosy tentmates) a line to hang your clothes.
they provide you safari beds and sleeping bags cuz it would be pretty cold at night.(and you will get shivers if you dont wear your jacket) Preparing to take a shower? Dont worry they provide you with hot(well it's actually warm) water too.but i would recommend using the pail and scoop method instead of the overhead shower head.the water coming out is like so pathetic you would probably take half an hour cleaning yourself. For those toilet bowl lovers you would be delighted to know that yes they do have toilet bowls for you to sit on and do your businesses happily.totally.
Rockhampton Town
Alright your training's over and you are on your way out of the dreaded camp into rockhampton town.the town's kinda small but it's easy to spot beer and wine kiosk along roads.be sure to try their local wine it's reasonably priced and it's very nice.for shoppers the clothings and accessories aint that cheap compared to local shops except for their wallets.it's cheaper by around 10 bucks.the biggest shopping mall is stockland which is right beside the bigW.there's a cinema beside so if you have too much time to spare might as well get your tickets and watch films not out in Singapore.the tickets are 9 per show.
try the local food cuz you cant find all of them in Singapore and even if you can find they might not be as good.
